Song Writing

Song Writing (3 days) provides technical skills, musical knowledge and performing experience that prepares students for a wide range of professional and creative opportunities as performing musicians. This course is designed for students who wish to develop contemporary music performance skills.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Song Writing (3 days) this course introduction to song writing through the study of the elements of gospel and contemporary song structure and style. This class develops the basic techniques and skills used by effective songwriters. Students will be fully immersed in the process it takes to write a song, from ideation to writing lyrics, to recording and production. In-depth mastery of harmony, theory and ear training, as well as comprehensive courses in music history, music production software, production, business relations, prepares students for careers as songwriters, producers, studio engineers, composers for film and television and more. Topics covered include a quick-start method to get students writing, general song writing tips and techniques, foundational instruction on lyrics, structure, melody, groove, chords, rhyme, harmony and analytical study of gospel and contemporary hit songs and the business of publishing and licensing. Students will complete a recording and mix, master and create liner notes for what can be used as a professional demo.


There will be a maximum of 20 participants per class.

What you will learn

Basic Techniques and Skills used by effective Songwriters: This part of the course will define and articulate the fully immersed in the process it takes to write a song, from ideation to writing lyrics, to recording and production. In-depth mastery of harmony, theory and ear training, as well as comprehensive courses in music history, music production software, production, business relations, prepares students for careers as songwriters, producers, studio engineers, composers for film and television and more. Fundamentals of song writing and music creation - This will be taught through practical activity in a sequential and enjoyable way that will including song structure, tempo, lyrics, melody, harmony, rhythmic elements, and subjective emotional qualities. Development of song writing skills, including application of fundamental concepts to the creation of original material based on topics and genres provided by the instructor. Includes critique and discussion. Your fee also includes an ID card to access the building, as well as access to our library facilities for the duration of this course.


Who is it for?

This course is ideal for anyone who regularly in as songwriters, producers, studio engineers, composers for film and television and more, or would like to be songwriter. If you are new to song writing, this course will introduce you to the essential basic skills that will give you the confidence of song writing. If you have been in a music composition, music production, or music performance for some time but would like to improve your theoretical knowledge of song writing, then this course is for you.

£150 (includes student materials pack and course tuition). Your fee also includes an ID card to access the building, as well as access to our fantastic library facilities for the duration of this course.

Current full-time School of Contemporary Music students and staff receive 50% discount on all short courses and School of Contemporary Music alumni receive 10% discount on all short course fees above £50. Full-time students from other institutions receive 50% discount on all community ensemble bookings and 10% discount on all short course fees above £50.
